What is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a form of assisted conception. IUI is also sometimes referred to as artificial insemination (AI). The procedure involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus during the ovulation period. Prior to the procedure, semen collected are washed to separate the sperm from the semen.

IUI is a less invasive treatment option and this procedure is generally recommended as a starting point for couples. However, not everyone makes a suitable candidate for IUI. Medical conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, severe endometriosis and severe male infertility will affect the chances of conceiving via IUI. Not to worry, there are various other suitable fertility treatment options that are available at Sunway Fertility Centre if you’ve been diagnosed with the mentioned medical conditions.

• The couple is unable to have sex due to an injury, disability or a medical condition such as premature ejaculation.

Monitoring for ovulation
A Transvaginal ultrasound scan will be performed by our doctor, to visualize the ovaries and the egg growth. Along the way, medications may be prescribed to assist the growth and/or the maturation of the eggs. Once the trigger injection (ovulation injection) is given, IUI will be scheduled 36-48 hours later.

Preparing the semen sample.
Your partner is expected to provide the semen sample approximately 2 hours before the IUI procedure. The processing of sperm involves separation of the sperm cells from the seminal fluid. This process, in addition to removing toxins, also increases the chances of the sperm reaching the fallopian tubes by increasing its fertilizing capacity.
